Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Telopea Emperors Torch
Description:
Telopea 'Emperor's Torch', commonly known as Waratah, is a striking evergreen shrub known for its bold, scarlet-red flower heads and leathery, dark green foliage. This Australian native is highly valued for its spectacular floral display and is a standout feature in gardens and landscapes. 'Emperor's Torch' is a compact, hardy cultivar that brings year-round interest and thrives in a variety of garden settings, particularly native and wildlife-friendly landscapes.
Flowers:
The large, vibrant red flowers of Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' are a major highlight, appearing from late spring through early summer. Each bloom can reach up to 15 cm in diameter and is made up of numerous small, tubular flowers arranged in a dense, dome-shaped cluster. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to birds, bees, and other pollinators. The flowers create a stunning display and are also perfect for use as cut flowers.
Foliage:
The dark green, lance-shaped leaves are leathery with a glossy finish, adding a contrasting texture to the bold flowers. The foliage remains dense and bushy year-round, providing an evergreen backdrop that maintains the plant's ornamental appeal even when not in bloom.
Fruit:
After flowering, small, woody seed pods may form along the stems. These pods persist on the plant, adding subtle texture, but they are not the primary ornamental feature.
Form and Size:
Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' typically grows to around 2-3 meters in height and 1.5-2 meters in width, making it a versatile shrub for both small and large gardens. Its upright, bushy form makes it ideal as a feature plant, in mixed garden beds, or even as a hedge or screen.
Growing Conditions:
This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. It is drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering during dry periods will help ensure strong growth and flowering. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool. Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' prefers mild climates and should be protected from heavy frosts.
Uses:
Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' is ideal for use as a feature plant, where its large, red flowers can be fully appreciated. It works well in native or wildlife-attracting gardens and can be used as a screen or hedge due to its dense growth habit. The flowers are also popular for use in cut flower arrangements, making this plant a valuable addition to both ornamental and functional gardens.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance and hardy, this shrub requires minimal care once established. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and promote bushier growth. Fertilize with a low-phosphorus fertilizer in spring to encourage healthy growth and prolific flowering. Avoid overwatering, as Telopea prefers well-drained soils.
Notes:
Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' is a stunning addition to any garden, with its vibrant red blooms providing a dramatic focal point. It is perfect for gardeners looking to add a bold, wildlife-attracting plant to their landscape.
Companion Plants:
Pairs beautifully with other Australian natives such as Grevillea, Banksia, and Callistemon. It also works well with fine-leaved grasses like Lomandra and silver-leafed plants such as Eremophila.
