Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Pyrus calleryana x pyrifolia NCPX1 Javelin
Description:
Pyrus calleryana × pyrifolia 'NCPX1' Javelin™, commonly known as the Javelin™ Ornamental Pear, is a deciduous tree renowned for its exceptionally narrow, upright growth habit. This cultivar is ideal for spaces where lateral room is limited, providing vertical interest and seasonal beauty.
Flowers:
In spring, Javelin™ produces clusters of white flowers that cover the branches, creating a striking display. These blossoms attract pollinators and add significant ornamental value to the tree.
Foliage:
The tree features new growth that emerges with a purple hue before transitioning to glossy green. In autumn, the foliage turns vibrant shades of burgundy and red, providing seasonal interest.
Fruit:
Following the flowering period, the tree may produce small, inedible fruit if suitably pollinated. These fruits are not significant for ornamental value but can add visual interest in the landscape.
Form and Size:
Javelin™ has a highly upright, narrow form, making it the narrowest growing form of Pyrus currently available in Australia. It typically reaches a height of 10 meters and a width of 2.5 meters, making it suitable for various landscape applications, including small gardens and urban settings.
Growing Conditions:
This ornamental pear thrives in full sun and is adaptable to a range of site conditions, including dry soils, slightly alkaline soils, and areas with air pollution. It can also tolerate intermittently wet, heavy soils. Regular watering during dry periods will promote optimal growth and flowering.
Uses:
Javelin™ is ideal for use in all garden situations, as an avenue, along a fence line, or to bring vertical lines into gardens and open spaces. Its narrow form makes it an exceptional choice for those tight on lateral space.
Maintenance:
The tree is relatively low-maintenance, with strong branch angles and an upright growth habit that minimize the need for pruning. If pruning is necessary, it should be done in late winter to avoid exposing fresh cuts to potential pathogens.
Notes:
Javelin™ is noted for its adaptability and resilience, making it a standout choice for gardeners seeking a narrow, upright ornamental pear.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other spring-flowering trees and shrubs, as well as perennials that complement its seasonal color changes.
