Nandina Colourscape

Nandina 'Colourscape' is a compact and vibrant cultivar of the popular sacred bamboo, prized for its ever-changing foliage that provides year-round colour. Unlike traditional Nandinas, 'Colourscape' remains neat and low-growing, with no need for pruning. Its foliage shifts with the seasons—emerging in bright lime-green and golden tones, deepening to rich shades of red, orange, and burgundy through the cooler months. This ornamental shrub brings a soft, textural element to gardens and is perfect for mass planting, borders, and containers.

Flowers
Produces small, white, star-like flowers in spring to early summer. These appear in delicate sprays above the foliage, adding a subtle ornamental touch.

Foliage
Fine, lacy foliage with a delicate texture and striking colour transitions throughout the year. New growth flushes in golden tones, later maturing to green, and intensifying to warm red, copper, and burgundy hues during autumn and winter.

Fruit
May produce small, red berries in late summer to autumn if flowering is successful, though fruiting is generally minimal and not a major feature of this cultivar.

Form and Size
Naturally compact and tidy, forming a rounded shrub approximately 50cm high x 50–60cm wide. Ideal for low hedging, borders, or as a colourful groundcover.

Growing Conditions
Thrives in full sun to part shade, with best colour achieved in sunny positions. Prefers well-drained soil, and is adaptable to a range of conditions including clay and loam. Drought-tolerant once established, and tolerates light frost.

Uses
Excellent for low borders, edging, feature planting, mass planting, or in decorative containers. Works well in both formal and informal designs, and provides year-round colour in courtyards, patios, and low-maintenance landscapes.

Maintenance
Very low maintenance. No pruning required to maintain shape. Apply slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Water regularly until established.

Notes
Non-invasive and sterile—unlike older Nandina cultivars, 'Colourscape' is bred for colour and compact growth without spreading or becoming weedy. Safe for modern landscapes and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Companion Plants
Pairs beautifully with Lomandra 'Lime Tuff', Carex 'Feather Falls', Dianella 'Little Jess', or Westringia 'Grey Box' for contrast in form and texture. Also complements Cordyline 'Electric Pink' and Agapanthus 'Snowstorm' for added seasonal flair.
