Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Magnolia grandiflora (MGTIG) Greenback™
Description:
Magnolia grandiflora (MGTIG) 'Greenback', commonly known as Greenback Magnolia, is a stunning evergreen tree known for its glossy, dark green foliage and large, fragrant white flowers. This cultivar is prized for its dense, upright growth habit and clean, pest-resistant leaves, making it an excellent choice for gardens, screens, and feature plantings. Its elegant form and year-round foliage provide lasting beauty in any landscape.
Flowers:
In late spring to early summer, 'Greenback' produces large, creamy white, cup-shaped flowers that can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. These blooms are highly fragrant, attracting bees and other pollinators, and provide a striking display against the dark green foliage.
Foliage:
The tree features dense, leathery, deep green leaves with a smooth, glossy surface. The undersides of the leaves are covered in a soft, rusty-brown felt, adding texture and interest. The evergreen foliage remains vibrant throughout the year, making it an excellent choice for year-round screening and privacy.
Fruit:
After flowering, 'Greenback' may produce small, cone-like seed pods that contain bright red seeds. These seed pods add subtle ornamental value and attract birds but are not a primary feature.
Form and Size:
This cultivar has an upright, pyramidal growth habit, typically reaching a height of 6 to 10 meters with a spread of about 4 to 5 meters. Its compact, columnar form makes it ideal for narrow spaces, hedges, and formal gardens.
Growing Conditions:
Greenback Magnolia thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and protect roots.
Uses:
'Greenback' is ideal as a specimen tree, for creating dense screens, or as a hedging plant in gardens and landscapes. Its compact form, beautiful flowers, and lush foliage make it a popular choice for formal gardens, entryways, and mixed borders. It is also suitable for use in large containers on patios or terraces.
Maintenance:
This variety is relatively low-maintenance. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release, acid-loving fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Mulching helps conserve moisture and protect the root zone.
Notes:
'Greenback' is valued for its dense foliage, fragrant flowers, and upright form, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens and feature plantings. Its tolerance to urban pollution and adaptability to various soil types make it a reliable choice for residential and commercial landscapes.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other evergreen shrubs like Camellia, Rhododendron, and Azalea. It also complements ground covers like Liriope and Hosta, adding texture and layers to garden beds.
