Loropetalum chinense Plum Gorgeous
Description:
Loropetalum chinense 'Plum Gorgeous', commonly known as Plum Gorgeous, is a striking evergreen shrub known for its rich, deep burgundy foliage and vibrant pink, fringe-like flowers. This hardy, low-maintenance plant is perfect for adding color and texture to garden beds, borders, and containers. Its year-round foliage color and seasonal blooms make it a standout feature in both modern and traditional garden settings.
Flowers:
In late winter to early spring, 'Plum Gorgeous' produces masses of bright magenta-pink, fringe-like flowers that cover the branches. These blooms appear sporadically throughout the year, attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden.
Foliage:
The plant features oval, deep burgundy leaves that hold their color throughout the year, providing a dramatic contrast against green or lighter-colored plants. The rich foliage color intensifies in cooler weather, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.
Form and Size:
'Plum Gorgeous' has a compact, rounded growth habit, typically reaching a height of 1.5 to 2 meters with a spread of about 1.5 meters. Its dense, bushy form makes it suitable for hedges, borders, or as a stand-alone specimen in garden beds.
Growing Conditions:
This versatile shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including slightly acidic to neutral soils. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool in hot climates.
Uses:
'Plum Gorgeous' is ideal for use in mixed borders, hedges, or as a feature plant in both formal and informal gardens. Its vibrant foliage and striking flowers make it a perfect choice for adding year-round color to garden beds and containers. It also works well as a low-maintenance screen or foundation planting.
Maintenance:
This plant is relatively low-maintenance. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages dense growth. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy foliage and flowering. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and protect the roots.
Notes:
Loropetalum chinense 'Plum Gorgeous' is valued for its rich, colorful foliage, year-round interest, and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. Its compact size and vibrant flowers make it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens and landscapes.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other evergreen shrubs like Camellias, Azaleas, and Nandina. It also complements flowering perennials and ground covers such as Lavender, Heuchera, and Liriope.
