Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Leptospermum Vertical Drop
Description:
Leptospermum 'Vertical Drop' is an attractive, weeping evergreen shrub known for its graceful, cascading form and delicate white flowers. This Australian native brings elegance to gardens with its flowing branches and fine foliage, making it ideal for use in borders, as a specimen plant, or as part of a mixed native planting. Its hardy nature and ornamental appeal make it well-suited to a variety of landscapes.
Flowers:
In spring, 'Vertical Drop' produces masses of small, white, tea tree-like flowers along its weeping branches. The flowers create a soft, romantic display and attract bees and other pollinators, adding seasonal interest and supporting local biodiversity.
Foliage:
The plant features narrow, aromatic green leaves that are finely textured and densely cover the branches. The evergreen foliage remains lush year-round and complements the white blooms, adding both structure and softness to the landscape.
Fruit:
After flowering, small, woody seed capsules form along the stems, typical of the Leptospermum species. These add a subtle decorative element and remain on the plant, providing habitat for small insects.
Form and Size:
'Vertical Drop' has a weeping growth habit, with cascading branches that create a soft, fountain-like effect. It typically reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters and a spread of around 1 meter, making it ideal for tight spaces or as a feature plant in smaller gardens.
Growing Conditions:
This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to various well-draining soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and can withstand light frost, making it suitable for a range of climates, including coastal areas.
Uses:
'Vertical Drop' is versatile in landscaping, often used as a feature plant, low hedge, or in borders. Its graceful form and white flowers make it a beautiful choice for softening the edges of garden beds, and its compact size makes it suitable for smaller spaces.
Maintenance:
This variety is low-maintenance, requiring minimal pruning. Light trimming after flowering can help maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. Apply a native-friendly, low-phosphorus fertilizer in spring to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Notes:
Leptospermum 'Vertical Drop' is valued for its weeping form and resilience. Its elegant branches and low-maintenance needs make it a popular choice for both native and ornamental gardens.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other Australian natives such as Grevillea, Westringia, and Callistemon. It also complements ground covers and small shrubs, adding textural contrast in mixed plantings.
