Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Hydrangea Magical Revolution
Description:
Hydrangea Magical Revolution is a compact and robust deciduous shrub that delivers a spectacular display of ever-changing blooms throughout its extended flowering season. This variety is particularly notable for its ability to produce flowers that transition in colour, offering dynamic visual interest. With its compact size and striking appearance, it is a favourite for small gardens, patios, and containers.
Flowers:
The mophead blooms are abundant, starting with bright pink or blue tones (depending on soil pH) and gradually evolving into deeper shades of purple, green, or burgundy. This long-lasting colour transformation extends from late spring to early autumn.
Foliage:
The dark green, ovate leaves form a dense canopy that provides a lush, textured backdrop for the vibrant blooms. The foliage remains healthy and attractive throughout the growing season.
Fruit:
Hydrangea Magical Revolution is grown for its ornamental flowers, with little emphasis on fruit production.
Form and Size:
This compact shrub grows to a height and width of approximately 0.8–1 meter, making it perfect for smaller spaces, container planting, or as a low hedge in garden beds.
Growing Conditions:
- Position: Prefers partial to full shade, protected from the harsh afternoon sun.
- Soil: Performs best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soils. Acidic soils produce blue-toned blooms, while neutral to alkaline soils bring out pink hues.
- Watering: Regular watering is essential, particularly during hot or dry periods, to maintain consistent soil moisture.
- Climate: Thrives in temperate climates but is adaptable to warmer regions with proper care.
Uses:
Ideal for garden borders, foundation planting, and decorative containers. The blooms are also highly valued for cut flower arrangements, both fresh and dried.
Maintenance:
- Light pruning after the flowering season helps maintain its shape and encourages new growth.
- Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and regulate root temperature.
- Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring and mid-season for optimal flowering.
- Remove spent blooms to encourage prolonged flowering.
Notes:
Hydrangea Magical Revolution’s ability to thrive in smaller spaces and its vivid, changing colours make it a standout choice for modern gardens. Regular feeding and soil testing can help enhance the vibrancy of its blooms.
Companion Plants:
Pair with shade-loving plants like hostas, heucheras, or Japanese forest grass for a harmonious effect. For a more dramatic display, combine with taller hydrangeas or evergreen shrubs.
