Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Grevillea Molly
Description: Grevillea 'Molly' is a robust, evergreen shrub that typically grows to about 1.5 to 2 meters in height and width. It is known for its dense, lush foliage and spectacular flower displays. The leaves are long, narrow, and dark green, creating a fine-textured, attractive backdrop for the vibrant flowers.
Flowers: The plant produces stunning, large clusters of deep pink to red flowers that bloom mainly in spring and summer, with sporadic flowering throughout the year. The flowers are cylindrical and spider-like, featuring long, slender styles that extend outward, creating a striking visual impact. These blooms are rich in nectar and are particularly attractive to birds, especially honeyeaters, as well as bees and butterflies.
Cultivation: Grevillea 'Molly' is well-suited to a range of Australian garden styles, including native, coastal, and cottage gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. The plant is adaptable to sandy, loamy, and even slightly clay soils, provided they are well-draining. It is also tolerant of coastal conditions, including salty winds.
Watering: Once established, Grevillea 'Molly' is quite drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. During extended dry periods, occasional deep watering will help maintain its health and vigour.
Pruning: Light pruning after the main flowering period helps maintain a neat and compact shape and encourages more prolific flowering. Avoid cutting into old wood, as this can damage the plant and reduce flowering potential.
Pests and Diseases: This Grevillea variety is generally pest-resistant. However, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may show signs of chlorosis (yellowing leaves) if the soil lacks adequate nutrients, particularly iron. Using a native plant fertiliser can help mitigate these issues.
Uses: Grevillea 'Molly' is a versatile shrub, ideal for use as a feature plant, in garden borders, or in mass plantings. Its bird-attracting flowers make it an excellent choice for wildlife gardens. The plant also works well in large containers, adding a splash of colour and texture to patios or balconies.
Environmental Benefits: As an Australian native, Grevillea 'Molly' supports local biodiversity by providing nectar and habitat for native birds, bees, and other beneficial insects. Its low water requirements and adaptability to various conditions make it a sustainable choice for eco-friendly gardens.
Care Tips:
- Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot by planting in raised beds or using well-draining soil.
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the stem to avoid rot.
- Fertilise with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser designed for native plants to ensure optimal health and flowering.
- Monitor for iron deficiency and treat with chelated iron if needed.
By including Grevillea 'Molly' in your garden, you enhance its visual appeal and support the local ecosystem, creating a vibrant, sustainable, and wildlife-friendly environment.
