Grevillea Knockout
Description:
Grevillea 'Knockout' is a striking evergreen shrub, known for its vibrant pink and red flowers and fine, divided foliage. This hardy Australian native is valued for its long flowering period and ability to attract wildlife, particularly birds and pollinators. Its compact, bushy form makes it a perfect choice for a variety of garden styles, from native landscapes to ornamental borders. 'Knockout' is drought-tolerant and thrives in a range of growing conditions, making it an ideal low-maintenance plant for any garden.
Flowers:
Grevillea 'Knockout' produces an abundance of large, spider-like flowers in shades of deep pink to red. The blooms appear primarily in spring and summer, with sporadic flowering throughout the year in milder climates. These nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to birds, bees, and butterflies, adding ecological value to the garden while providing a bold splash of color.
Foliage:
The foliage consists of finely divided, fern-like leaves that are a rich green. The delicate texture of the foliage creates a soft, feathery appearance, which contrasts beautifully with the bright flowers. The plant’s dense, bushy habit ensures year-round interest in the landscape.
Fruit:
Small, woody seed pods may form after flowering, though they are not a significant ornamental feature of the plant.
Form and Size:
This compact shrub typically grows to around 1-1.5 meters in height and width. Its naturally rounded, bushy form makes it ideal for mixed borders, low hedging, or as a feature plant in smaller gardens.
Growing Conditions:
Grevillea 'Knockout' thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and adapts well to a variety of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. The plant is frost-tolerant and performs well in both coastal and inland environments. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and support healthy root growth.
Uses:
This versatile shrub is perfect for use in native and wildlife-friendly gardens, where its vibrant flowers can attract birds and pollinators. Its compact form and bold flowers make it a standout choice for mixed borders, low hedges, or as a feature plant in small gardens. It is also well-suited for mass planting in larger landscapes.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance and tough, Grevillea 'Knockout' requires little care once established. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages bushier growth. Use a low-phosphorus fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. The plant prefers well-drained soil and should not be overwatered.
Notes:
Grevillea 'Knockout' is prized for its resilience and ability to thrive in low-water conditions. Its extended flowering season and bold color make it a favorite among gardeners looking to create vibrant, wildlife-attracting gardens with minimal upkeep.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other Australian natives such as Callistemon, Westringia, and Leptospermum. It also contrasts nicely with silver-foliaged plants like Eremophila or grasses like Lomandra.
