Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Grevillea Hills Jubilee
Description:
Grevillea 'Hills Jubilee' is a compact and hardy evergreen shrub, admired for its vibrant pink and cream flowers and fine, dense foliage. This Australian native hybrid is well-suited for a range of garden styles, particularly native and wildlife gardens, where it provides year-round interest and attracts pollinators. Its small size and long flowering period make it ideal for smaller gardens, borders, or container planting, offering a splash of color in both formal and informal settings.
Flowers:
The plant produces clusters of beautiful pink and cream spider-like flowers, which appear throughout much of the year, with a peak in spring and summer. These nectar-rich blooms attract birds, bees, and butterflies, adding ecological value to the garden while providing a striking visual display.
Foliage:
The fine, needle-like leaves are dark green and form a dense, bushy habit. The foliage creates a soft, feathery appearance, making it an attractive backdrop for the vibrant flowers. The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, even when the plant is not in bloom.
Fruit:
Small, woody seed pods may form after flowering, though they are not a significant ornamental feature of the plant.
Form and Size:
Grevillea 'Hills Jubilee' is a compact shrub that typically reaches 1–1.5 meters in height and width. Its rounded, bushy form makes it perfect for low hedging, garden borders, or as a feature plant in small garden spaces. It can also be used in larger containers for patio or courtyard gardens.
Growing Conditions:
Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. Grevillea 'Hills Jubilee' is drought-tolerant once established and can adapt to a variety of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. It is frost-tolerant and performs well in both coastal and inland areas. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and support healthy growth.
Uses:
This versatile shrub is ideal for use in native gardens, mixed borders, or as a low hedge. Its long-lasting flowers and dense growth habit make it perfect for attracting birds and other pollinators. Grevillea 'Hills Jubilee' also works well in containers or small garden beds, adding a burst of color and texture.
Maintenance:
Low-maintenance and tough, Grevillea 'Hills Jubilee' requires little care once established. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid overwatering, as the plant prefers well-drained conditions. Use a low-phosphorus native fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth and flowering.
Notes:
This hybrid Grevillea is known for its resilience and ability to flower over an extended period. It is a valuable addition to wildlife gardens and provides excellent color and texture in water-wise landscapes. Avoid using high-phosphorus fertilizers, as they can harm the plant.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other Australian natives such as Callistemon, Leptospermum, and Westringia. It also contrasts nicely with grasses like Lomandra or other flowering shrubs like Correa and Eremophila.
