Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Euphorbia trigona 'Green', also known as the African Milk Tree, is a striking, upright succulent prized for its bold architectural form and ease of care. With its tall, columnar stems and minimal branching, it adds strong vertical interest to gardens and indoor spaces alike. This variety features all-green colouring, unlike its red-tinged cousin (Euphorbia trigona 'Rubra'), making it a versatile accent plant in both modern and arid garden designs.
Flowers
Rarely flowers in cultivation, especially in cooler or indoor environments. When it does, small, insignificant cream to white flowers may appear at the tips of the stems.
Foliage
Narrow, oval green leaves appear along the edges of each vertical stem, nestled between small paired thorns. The lush green stems are ridged and lined in a distinctive triangular pattern.
Fruit
Not typically produced in cultivation; not considered a feature of this plant.
Form and Size
Grows as an upright, branching succulent that can reach 1.5–2m high and 60cm wide over time. It forms tall, narrow clumps that provide a strong structural element in garden design.
Growing Conditions
Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light, and thrives in well-drained soil. Highly drought-tolerant and well-suited to warm, dry climates or indoor cultivation. Protect from frost and overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to rot.
Uses
Ideal as a feature plant in pots, rock gardens, desert-style landscapes, or as an indoor statement plant in a bright spot. Excellent for adding height and drama with minimal maintenance.
Maintenance
Extremely low maintenance. Water sparingly—allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Requires little to no fertiliser; a light feed in spring with a cactus/succulent fertiliser is sufficient. Caution: Produces a white milky sap (latex) that is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes. Always wear gloves when handling or pruning.
Notes
Despite its cactus-like appearance, it is not a true cactus. It’s a fast-growing, reliable plant in suitable conditions and can be easily propagated from stem cuttings.
Companion Plants
Pairs well with other succulents such as Aloe vera, Agave attenuata, Crassula ovata (Jade Plant), and Senecio serpens. Also complements bold-foliaged plants like Cordyline 'Electric Star' or Kalanchoe ‘Dragonfire’ in contemporary settings.
