Top 10 Must-Have Tropical Plants for Queensland Gardens
Acer japonicum Vitifolium Full Moon Maple
Description:
Full Moon Maple (Acer japonicum 'Vitifolium') is a beautiful, deciduous small tree admired for its large, vine-like leaves and stunning autumn color. Native to Japan, this maple variety has a compact, rounded form and is especially valued for its broad leaves that turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and purple in fall. Its ornamental appeal makes it ideal for small gardens, shaded borders, and woodland landscapes.
Flowers:
In spring, Vitifolium produces small, red-purple flowers that appear in clusters. While subtle, these flowers add a delicate charm and support early-season pollinators.
Foliage:
The tree features large, deeply lobed, vine-like leaves that are bright green during the growing season. In autumn, the foliage transforms into a stunning display of orange, red, and purple, creating a vivid seasonal accent in the landscape.
Fruit:
After flowering, the tree produces small, winged samaras that mature in late summer to autumn. These seeds add a decorative touch and are often retained on the tree, contributing to its visual interest.
Form and Size:
Full Moon Maple has a compact, rounded growth habit, typically reaching a height of 4 to 6 meters with a similar spread. Its dense foliage and rounded form make it suitable for smaller garden spaces and as a focal point in mixed plantings.
Growing Conditions:
This maple thrives in partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. It benefits from protection from harsh afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates, to prevent leaf scorch. Regular watering is important, particularly during dry periods.
Uses:
Vitifolium is ideal as a feature tree, specimen plant, or in woodland gardens. Its colorful fall foliage adds seasonal interest to shaded landscapes, and it works well as an understory tree in mixed borders, complementing other shade-loving plants.
Maintenance:
This variety is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from light pruning in late winter to shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Apply mulch to retain soil moisture and protect the roots, and fertilize in spring with an acid-loving plant fertilizer to support healthy growth.
Notes:
Full Moon Maple is celebrated for its vibrant autumn colors and lush, broad leaves. Its compact form and ability to thrive in shaded environments make it an excellent choice for small gardens and woodland plantings.
Companion Plants:
Pairs well with other shade-loving plants such as Rhododendrons, Hostas, and Ferns. It also complements other Japanese maples and woodland perennials, creating a layered, naturalistic aesthetic.
